We now live in a world where Liverpool are willing to bid £66.3 million (€75 million) for a player. For years, FSG naysayers have complained about a lack of ambition. Although the two biggest targets of the window have yet to be completed, it’s hard to argue that Jürgen Klopp isn’t being fully backed. Considering the size of the stumbling blocks so far presented by Naby Keïta and Virgil van Dijk, we could argue the club has had too much ambition.
Unfortunately, reports out of Germany indicate that this bid was also rejected out of hand. In an interview with Sportsbild, Energy Drink Leipzig’s owner insisted Naby Keïta is going nowhere.
“We don’t sell any of our players just to get money,” Dietrich Mateschitz said. “Lately we got a 75million Euros offer for Naby Keïta. No way! He has a contract and he will accomplish it.
“To sell him would not only be a proof of distrust to our fans but also the wrong sign for our players like Timo Werner, who is in demand too.”
It’s impossible to know where Liverpool will go from here. Keïta still wants to come to Liverpool, Klopp still wants him, but how much further is the club willing to go to secure the transfer?
So far Keïta has not seemed willing to put in a transfer request, but he might need to start seriously agitating for a move if it is to come to fruition. Stay tuned.
