The Dutch are not exactly known for defending, but according to the always enlightening reports out of Italy, Jurgen Klopp is attempting to immediately bounce back from the Virgil van Dijk catastrophuck with a move for another Dutch defender.
The second-choice defender in question, 25-year-old Stefan de Vrij, is currently plying his trade with Lazio in Serie A. Liverpool allegedly offered £17 million for the defender, but the offer was immediately rejected. They must have heard what Dutch defenders are going for these days. De Vrij has a year left on his contract, and is apparently not interested in renewing with the Italian club.
Liverpool Football Club may very well be looking to change the subject or cause a temporary distraction (have they tried smoke bombs?) after yesterday’s unfortunate events, but it seems unlikely that they would move so quickly for another option. Indeed, the more likely explanation is that Lazio and/or de Vrij is attempting to use the Liverpool disaster to hype interest.
Either that or Liverpool are now panic buying in an attempt to beat the possible transfer ban. Take your pick.
