Joe Gomez has had a difficult Liverpool run. Brought over from Charlton in 2015 as a teenager, Gomez initially impressed in Brendan Rodgers’s side before a knee injury sadly kept him out of commission for a year.
He’s back now, but Rodgers is gone, replaced by Klopp and a whole new style of play. The 20-year-old defender got precious few games with the first team last season, thanks to Liverpool’s light fixture schedule. This season he may be off on loan to get more playing time.
It’s claimed that newly-promoted Brighton is interested in signing Gomez from Liverpool on a season-long loan. The team, led by manager Chris Hughton, are eager to beef up their squad in preparation for their first Premier League run.
In return, Gomez will get a chance for some much needed game time and Premier League experience. He last played for the Reds way back in January.
While Klopp’s men will have to compete on four fronts this season, it’s unclear how many opportunities for playing time would be available to Gomez. However, the Englishman is young and talented, and has already proved that he can provide capable cover in both the center-back and full-back positions. He may yet prove to have a part to play in next season’s campaign.
Reportedly, Klopp is undecided on this move and wants to use the pre-season and summer tour to make a decision regarding Gomez’s fate. Klopp will likely also want to strengthen Liverpool’s options in defense before losing one of them on a loan.
