Cesc Fabregas, who has started only 10 matches this season for Antonio Conte, is likely to be on the move this summer, despite having two years left on his contract with Chelsea. Liverpool and Klopp are said to be one of the teams interested in the Spaniard, along with Manchester United, AC Milan, and Inter.
Fabregas is rated by Chelsea somewhere in the area of £25-£30million, and currently enjoys a £170,000-a-week contract with the Blues.
While Fabregas has made an impact off of the bench for Conte this season, it’s hard to imagine that the notoriously injury-prone, soon-to-be 30-year-old midfielder would adapt well to Klopp’s hard-running style of play. And for that amount of money, FSG would be expecting someone to slot into the midfield for years to come.
Regardless, word is that it’s a race between Klopp and Mourinho to see who will land the player. Fabregas is said to prefer staying in the Premier League instead of moving to Italy, and won’t be thinking about his future until this summer, after Chelsea’s title run and FA Cup final have concluded.
Klopp needs midfield reinforcements for next season. The Reds will be making a return to Europe — though whether it’s in the Champions League or the Europa League is still undecided. Their threadbare midfield was exposed this season after injuries to Jordan Henderson, Adam Lallana, and Sadio Mané left the team in a real bind. Lucas Leiva helped fill the gap, but even he is said to be on the way out this season.
Whether Klopp believes that Fabregas is the man to help ease Liverpool’s midfield issues, and whether the club is willing to drop £30million to do it remains to be seen.
