Last week, the word on the street was the Manchester City had taken the lead in the chase to land Southampton’s centerback Virgil Van Dijk. Now, if TalkSport are to be believed, Chelsea have emerged as the front runner to land this hot summer prospect.
For better or worse, Liverpool have made no secret that Van Dijk is one of their four top transfer targets along with Fulham’s leftback Ryan Sessegnon, RB Leipzig’s midfield dynamo Naby Keita, and Bayer Leverkusen’s winger Julian Brandt.
Of course, the worse part of that equation comes if one or more (or all) of the above players openly reject Liverpool for greener or bluer pastures. Although TalkSport is hardly a reputable source, it certainly seems like Van Dijk is far from a sure thing, despite the appeal of working with Jürgen Klopp and roughly half of his former dressing room.
It’s just the beginning of May, but this drama is sure to have a few more twists and turns before Van Dijk finally puts pen to paper somewhere that isn’t Southampton.
