Vladimír Šmicer Insists That Liverpool Go After Kylian Mbappé

The Istanbul hero says that Liverpool’s hopes of winning the Premier League title rest with Mbappé

We’re nearing the end of the Premier League season, and that means the summer transfer window will open very soon. There’s little doubt that how Liverpool fares in the window will be contingent on how they make out in their last two games of the season and whether they can qualify for the Champions League next season. Either way, it’s going to be an important summer for the Reds.

Which means everyone’s got an opinion on what Liverpool should do.

To wit: Vladimír Šmicer, the former Liverpool midfielder and celebrated hero of Istanbul, says he knows what his former club need to do to become legitimate title contenders next season. All they have to do is sign a player that half of Europe’s biggest clubs are trying to woo.

Šmicer says Liverpool’s biggest problem is at striker, with Sadio Mané being out of the team for long stretches of 2017 so far (first due to competing in the Africa Cup of Nations and later due to injury), Daniel Sturridge not being called on for various reasons, and Divock Origi not quite picking up the slack. The former Czech Republic international thinks Kylian Mbappé, who’s scored 25 goals for Monaco this season and helped fire the Ligue 1 club into the Champions League semifinals, will fit the bill just nicely.

“Daniel Sturridge has had a lot of problems this season. I thought he would be our main striker like Diego Costa at Chelsea, Zlatan Ibrahimovic at United and Harry Kane at Tottenham. I think we've missed this type of player. It's probably cost us the title. If we had a striker who had scored 20 goals plus, who knows? We could be top. I like the Monaco striker Mbappé. He's only 18, but what I've seen from him has been really unbelievable for such a young player. Everything looks so natural to him. I like the way he plays. He would definitely be very expensive.”

Great plan! What could go wrong!

“All the big clubs in Europe will chase him so it would be difficult to get him, but if I was the Liverpool manager I'd go for him.”

Oh. Right.

The important thing right now, Šmicer says, is to get into the Champions League next season. Then: fill out the squad.

Liverpool fans love the European nights. They're magic and there have been so many great ones in the history of Liverpool,” he added.

“If we finish fourth and go into the Champions League then it's definitely a positive from my point of view. I don't want to say it's great success because after such a good start to the season I really believed we could fight for the title. We won at Arsenal and Chelsea, and against all the top teams we did really well. But injuries cost us some points. We've missed Sadio Mané a lot. When he was playing you knew he could make the difference in games. We need to be careful for next season. If we go into the Champions League that means at least six more tough games. We've lacked depth this season so we need to learn and ensure we can handle those extra matches. We need quality players to take us to a higher level.”

Šmicer isn’t wrong, per se. But it sounds a bit like a politician proposing massive tax cuts and then saying they’ll be paid for by “fostering innovation.” That’s great buddy! How are we going to do it? No one ever has a question for how. Similarly, Šmicer doesn’t seem to have any idea how Liverpool are going to be able to sign Mbappe when Real Madrid and Manchester United are also after him.

Liverpool signing Mbappé would be terrific. I’m just not holding my breath.
