Public posturing or genuine insight is the question of the day as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to Liverpool rumours hit the back pages for another round, with multiple reports from outlets as varied as The Telegraph and Mirror all claiming the Arsenal player could end up making the switch to Anfield this summer.
This isn't a new rumour by any stretch, and from a Liverpool perspective, it's known at least that Oxlade-Chamberlain isn't considered a priority signing in midfield, where Naby Keita remains the club's top target. Meanwhile on the wing, interest has reportedly switched from Julian Brandt to Mohamed Salah.
The 23-year-old Oxlade-Chamberlain, though, is reportedly frustrated by a lack of urgency on Arsenal's part to try to sign him to a new deal, with the club currently pushing to extend Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez but telling the England international that any negotiations over his future will have to wait until the summer.
That uncertainty over whether Arsenal even consider him a key part of their future plans has him looking elsewhere, as does a reported desire to play more in midfield, where Liverpool would reportedly consider using him—if their interest in Keita doesn't end with the player at Anfield, at least.
Oxlade-Chamberlain has always seen himself as more midfielder than winger, and a chance to move into a midfield shuttling role full time as international teammate Adam Lallana has under Jürgen Klopp could appeal to him. All of this, though, remains almost wholly speculative.
Liverpool are interested—but, according to connected journalists, only if their top targets fall through. In the meantime, all of the talk looks more than a little like posturing between Oxlade-Chamberlain and Arsenal, with the player trying to prove his value by having his agent talk about Liverpool interest.
Yet the previous confirmation that Liverpool are interested makes it impossible to dismiss this all as nothing more than the talk of Oxlade-Chamberlain's agent. So now everyone waits—waits to see how Liverpool's pursuit of Keita goes and waits to see what Arsenal offers their player at the end of the season.
