Steve McManaman, former Red and current talking head for BT Sport, has weighed in on the topic on everyone’s minds: what Jürgen Klopp should do this summer about the thin squad.
The answer most people seem to prefer is “buy everyone.”
Following performances against Stoke, however, Macca is able to provide a bit more guidance.
“[Liverpool] showed a lot of character [against Stoke] which is great, but you can pinpoint areas where [Liverpool] could improve that starting eleven.”
He starts with the obvious.
“James Milner has done a wonderful job [playing out of position] but he’s not a left-back,” McManaman said. “You could go and get a better left-back to play in that position.”
Mané’s knee-injury will keep him out for the rest of the season. McManaman believes his absence highlights another critical need.
“I still think [Liverpool] need one more winger, possibly two, to give them options when it comes to trying to break the lesser teams down when games get condensed.”
“I must say Mignolet was excellent,” McManaman added when asked about Simon Mignolet’s performance against Stoke. “He made some brilliant saves. Coutinho and Firmino will get the plaudits but Mignolet kept them in the game and deserves a round of applause.”
“But he does make mistakes. Man City might be looking for a goalkeeper, Liverpool might be looking for one too.”
So another left-back, maybe a centre-back, a few wingers, and another goalkeeper. This should make for an interesting summer.
