Back in December, Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp summed up the rumors surrounding a potential move for Arsenal’s young attacking midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in one word, “Nonsense.”
“Usually I don’t say anything about transfer rumours, but I can make an exception, no problem,” Klopp elaborated, briefly. “This is nonsense. From my side, there’s nothing else to say about it.”
Well, Klopp, you might not have anything else to say about it, but the media has pages and blog to fill (oh, hey there). So, this rumor mill ain’t over until we say it is!
Reportedly, the 23-year-old Arsenal man is unhappy with his playing time, and has not yet received a contract extension (there is about 15 months remaining on his current one). As such, Manchester City, Manchester United, and yes, Liverpool are reportedly interested in Oxlade-Chamberlain.
In addition to Klopp’s previous firm denial of interest, the move doesn’t seem to make a great deal of sense for either of the two clubs, or the player. It seems increasingly likely that Arsenal will lose one or both of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Özil. Additionally, it’s hard to see where Oxlade-Chamberlain will fit in this side, especially with more pressing positional needs around the pitch.
With the season winding down, the rumor mill is picking back up. Stay tuned for the next turn in this not-a-drama.
