Rumour Mongering: Southampton Interested in Sturridge

Oh how the turntables?

Southampton, the club who recently made every Reds’ holiday dreams come true, are apparently interested in securing the services of Daniel Sturridge on a loan through the end of this season. The Telegraph reports that Southampton boss, Mauricio Pellegrino, is keen on bringing in more pace (and goals) to his team and Sturridge is on the short-list of names he is considering.

Sturridge has had a rough time securing a starting spot with the Reds in the last few seasons: his injury problems have continued into this season, and Klopp’s favoured lineups have very rarely allowed Sturridge the opportunity to do much more than come on as a substitute.

Without regular minutes at Liverpool, Sturridge’s chances of making the England team in the coming World Cup are getting smaller and smaller. So it’s no wonder his name has been linked to several sides these past few weeks. If any of the rumours are true, Southampton would be up against a couple of La Liga sides, AC Milan, and maybe Newcastle in their pursuit of Sturridge.

It’s unclear if Pellegrino’s side has reached out to Liverpool regarding the striker at this point or if we’re dealing with idle speculation alone. What we do know is that Sturridge is keen on a loan (or anything else that gets him some minutes) and Southampton is keen on a goalscorer they can count on temporarily (but maybe also permanently if everything works out really well). We’ll have to wait and see if anything comes out of this.
