The transfer window is on the horizon, and that can only mean one thing for Liverpool: links to all the wingers in Europe (double points if they’ve been linked with Liverpool before).
Prior to Liverpool securing the transfer of the season, perhaps any season, by shelling out a now-laughably low fee of £35 million for Mohamed Salah, the Reds were also linked to Sporting Lisbon’s winger Gelson Martins. According to reports out of Portugal, Liverpool might be back in for the winger in January, with the publication A Bola reporting that Merseyside’s finest are prepared to match his £53 million buy-out.
Well, you know what they say, £50 million is the new £20 million.
A cursory look at the current Liverpool squad makes this particular rumor a bit of a head-scratcher. Salah, Mane, Firmino, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Coutinho, and Lallana could all conceivably fill in on the wings. You could even add in Gini, Milner and Ings if you were feeling charitable.
However, the move might make sense as a proactive replacement for Coutinho, who seems likely to be on his way out the door this summer.
The 22-year-old Portuguese international has 5 goals and 3 assists in a combined 17 appearances in the Portuguese league and Champions League, and plays predominantly on the right wing. There’s no word as to how good he’d fill in at center half.
