Come January, Schalke 04’s Leon Goretzka will be free to negotiate with other clubs because, just like Liverpool’s current situation with Emre Can, his contract ends next summer. And it could in fact be that Liverpool’s link to Goretzka squares up nicely with their worry over Can walking next summer. Goretzka is a midfielder with some Can similarities from what I’ve seen. One German midfielder could be on a short list of replacements for one departing one.
We haven’t heard much from the club about Emre really. Just that Klopp wants to keep hold of him and that so far the player and the board have been unable to come to agreeable terms. Nothing new here in terms of business, but, emotionally, it would be a shame to see Can go. At 23-years-old, he’s got a lot of time to make good on some of his weak spots. His strengths are already obvious: grinning, strutting, pomade.
Goretzka, on the other hand. His hold-out at Schalke doesn’t appear to be an effort to get a better offer. The 22-year-old, German international has spent the bulk of his young career at Schalke and with his star on the rise seems to be weighing up his options for the future.
Christian Heidel, Schalke’s sporting director, has come out to say that their club expects Goretzka to have completed his weighing and to inform them of his plans for the future very soon.
“I think if Schalke had no chance to keep him I would be the first to know that,” said Heidel.
“But I haven’t received that kind of information until now.
“Leon will make a decision soon without us building any pressure on him.”
Goretzka’s other admirers reportedly include Barcelona, Juventus and Arsenal. The player is poised to make a step up to the next level. If Liverpool are truly interested they may have to harness the full power of Klopp’s charisma to get a deal done but the player appears suited to Liverpool’s attacking play. And he could be a solid acquisition for the club whether or not Emre sticks around.
So, you know, we’ll get back to you on this in a couple of weeks or so when we learn that all of this has been either legit or bullshit.
