Last winter, Liverpool and Bayern Munich were both linked with a move for Julian Draxler, then of Wolfsburg, but the young German winger in the end headed to Paris Saint-Germain in a big money deal. Nearly a year on from that, and things haven’t quite gone to plan for Draxler.
He’s a first team regular, but he’s not a headlining star, and the arrival of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe over the summer has meant he’s only started 10 times in the league, averaging less than 60 minutes per appearance. Out of four Champions League appearances, he’s started just once.
Queue tabloid talk in England in Germany of an imminent departure, then, and who better to link Draxler to than the two sides who were meant to be interested in him the last time around only to miss out when he headed to France? Draxler, though, says he isn’t going to be leaving Paris any time soon.
"I am not thinking about leaving the club in winter or even in the summer," the 24-year-old insisted this week. "I am right in the middle of the season with PSG and solely concentrating on our big targets. Now is not the relevant time to think about my immediate or near future."
When asked about the chance of moving for Draxler over the summer, Bayern Munich upper management said they simply wouldn’t have had room for him in their squad at the time. Meanwhile, there has been nothing at all reliable from the Liverpool end suggesting they’re still interested.
Still, as long as a player like Draxler could conceivably be available, fans and the tabloid rumour mongers are going to want to connect them to an obvious destination or two. At least until a more interesting rumour—maybe even one that could actually happen—comes along.
