In a rumor that will make at least on TLO regular very, very happy, there are reports out of Italy that Liverpool are looking at triggering Suso’s £35 million release clause. Spanish midfielder, currently plying his trade at AC Milan, Jesús Joaquín Fernández Sáenz de la Torre, better known—and mercifully so—as Suso, is apparently a Liverpool target.
Of course, Suso was a Liverpool player, on our books as recently as 2015. He was never quite good enough to get regular first team minutes in some very mediocre Liverpool sides, and signed a deal to go to Milan after his contract expired. Milan paid a scant €1.3 million in compensation to the Reds.
Suso’s fortunes have since turned around. He’s now a regular for AC Milan, making 10 starts, and another appearance of the bench, in Serie A, scoring 5 goals and setting up 3 more.
The rumors link this move to Coutinho’s transfer situation, because of course they did. The “logic” going that Liverpool will want a like-for-like player, and um...hey...Suso is sort of a guy that can play as an attacker or in midfield and do sort of Coutinho things?
This ignores the question of whether Suso would actually want to come back to Liverpool. He’s still young—just 23-years-old—and finally getting regular minutes at a big club. Although, those were the pre-Jurgen Klopp era, and those Klopp hugs must look mightily appealing from Italy.
Anyway, probably best to ignore these rumors for now.
