There were very few people who even expected Alberto Moreno to stay at Anfield at the end of last season, let alone start regularly and perform convincingly. Yet, here we are, bang in the middle of a Morenaissance in which the left-back is churning out consistently solid and rarely heart attack-inducing performances.
And utterly disrespectful of the Morenaissance we’re bearing witness to, newspapers report that Liverpool are looking to beef up their left-back options and reached out to Napoli star, Faouzi Ghoulam. According to the Metro, who are cribbing notes from L’Equipe, Liverpool have made contact with Ghoulam in a bid to get him to move to Anfield in January.
Ghoulam joined Napoli in 2014 and has since become a key part of the Serie A side. However, his contract with the team expires at the end of this season and talks have apparently stalled in recent weeks. Liverpool were linked with Ghoulam in the summer as well, but nothing came of the rumours (apart from Liverpool signing a completely different player).
If Liverpool are really interested, they would be up against Chelsea, Manchester City, and Juventus in trying to sign Ghoulam from an incredibly reluctant Napoli. According to the Metro, Liverpool’s contact was immediately rebuffed by the Italian side, who want Ghoulam to finish the season with them.
Given the lack of any real indication that Liverpool are moving for the Algerian national (confirmation from Liverpool, for starters), it’s very likely that this link is the work of Ghoulam’s agent either trying to get a more favourable deal from Napoli or drum up further interests from other teams.
So for now, there’s probably nothing to see here. Let’s move along.
