With rumours of a £25M West Ham approach for Daniel Sturridge flying, former Liverpool midfielder and Sky pundit Jamie Redknapp has said the striker’s time at Anfield could be drawing to an end and that hard choices will have to be made.
"I don't see him as being Liverpool's best striking option because of the way Jurgen Klopp wants to play,” said Redknapp. “You've got Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, and Philippe Coutinho, so I think it's coming to a bit of a crossroads.
“Daniel Sturridge will have to weigh up what's for the best. You don't get enough game time out of him and when he does play, he doesn't show enough quality at this present moment. Something isn't quite right with him."
Once, selling Sturridge would have been unthinkable. Now, with Liverpool out of the cup competitions and down to just the league, barring injury he isn’t likely to be better than third choice the rest of the way this season.
For his part, Redknapp thinks the West Ham interest is probably too late to get a deal done—especially given it would leave Liverpool with just two senior strikers—but he does believe Sturridge’s Liverpool “days are numbered.”
And, as disappointing as it is to admit, he’s probably right about the 27-year-old, who appears not to be favoured by Jürgen Klopp and isn’t likely to get the chance at regular playing time if he remains at Anfield.
