Liverpool supporters have clamored for the club to make an impactful investment in the January transfer window, but no deals have materialized to this point. Still, a handful of rumors have been tossed about to keep things interesting.
One reported transfer pursuit is that of José Fonte, Southampton’s 33-year-old defender. He handed in a transfer request earlier in the month, leading to speculation that a bid from the Reds was imminent.
But unlike his teammate Virgil van Dijk, a player Liverpool could use for years to come, there was never a logical explanation for why Fonte fit the club’s plans. Past his prime and not a starting caliber talent, he made an odd potential signing.
Now, SkySports have put the matter to bed — and subdued fears — with a report that the Reds are not actually pursuing Fonte. The network writes, “Sky Sports News HQ has been told there is no interest in the centre back from Liverpool and he is not a target for Jurgen Klopp’s side.”
While this news won’t stop the next wave of ridiculous transfer gossip, at least it’s clear this particular link is false. In a month that invites chaos, any piece of clarity is appreciated.
