This summer has been one where money has been spent by Premier League clubs like never before. Quite a few high-profile managers taking charge of clubs with ambition to improve drastically in a short space of time, a record £5.136 billion TV deal (2016-2019) for English top flight clubs that kicked in this summer, and a footballing culture that is dangerously preoccupied with "making statements" have all contributed to over £1 billion spent on transfers this summer.
Paul Pogba became the world's most expensive player ever, a developing John Stones would provide Manchester City little change from £50 million, and relegated Aston Villa spending £15 million on a striker -- a record for the Championship -- makes Leicester City's £30 million offer for Troy Deeney look far more reasonable now. Welcome to the new world.
Today the madness will all end, but not before more of its kind takes place in the globe's most financially bloated and overhyped league. Joe Hart, David Luiz, Jack Wilshere, Mario Balotelli, Jim White, and maybe even Harry Redknapp are set to star on this hallowed day. If we're lucky, there might even be a surprise or two.
