Hot on the heels of Ben Chilwell to Liverpool links appearing to be dealt a death blow, and in keeping with the proper tenor of silly season, some outlets are reporting Liverpool may be looking towards PSV Eindhoven's Jetro Willems, a 22 year old Dutch International and former teammate of Liverpool's newest signing, Georginio Wijnaldum.
Willems responded to Wijnaldum's official unveiling with a tweet promising the two would see one another soon. The parsing of said tweet inevitably led to fans and others to wondering whether or not Willems' imminent arrival at Anfield could explain the soon. And, based on nothing more than this, a round of rumours linking Willems to Anfield was born.
Lacking any firm evidence, this seems a rumour spun out of nothing. Willems is an international teammate of Wijnaldum's and will expect to meet up with him again with the Dutch national team—the first break this season is in the final week of August. If Willems' Tweet was meant to signal anything more than that, a transfer to Liverpool would need to be nearly completed, and at that point it's likely at least one club-connected journalist would have heard about it.
Giving this rumor a veneer of respectability, though, is the fact Willems has recently made noises about wanting a move to a bigger league, and he has not yet signed an extension on his contract, which runs at the end of next season. Should he continue to refuse to sign, PSV might well end up looking to avoid a departure on a free by selling him this summer.
Still, as of now there's no solid reason to think that even in that case Liverpool would be one of the clubs lining up to buy, and Reds fans would be well advised to treat this rumour with extreme skepticism for the time being at least.
