Liverpool today completed the signing of 30-year-old centre half Ragnar Klavan from FC Augsburg in a £4.5M deal. The steady, veteran defender becomes the fifth senior signing of the Jürgen Klopp era after achilles injuries to Mamadou Sakho and Joe Gomez forced the club to look for depth in the transfer market.

Klavan has had a long and winding career to date, beginning with FC Elva in the Estonian Esiliiga B before spending time at Viljandi JK Tulevik, FC Flora Tallinn, Valerenga, Heracles Almelo, AZ Alkamaar, and then finally FC Augsburg. He is the captain of the Estonian national football team and has made 112 career appearances for his country.

In the four seasons he spent at Augsburg, Klavan made 140 appearances and chipped in with four set piece goals. He was key in holding Liverpool to a single goal across 180 minutes in their Europa League Round of 32 tie, in which Liverpool needed a handball and penalty to avoid being taken to extra time in their toughest test of the knockout round.

"I’m really honoured to be part of this amazing club, this amazing team," said the defender. "It’s hard to put it into words, because it’s been a dream of mine for 22 years to come to the Premier League and be a part of this amazing club, Liverpool. The Premier League is the most attractive league in the world and you always have amazing players here."

Klavan is not expected to take part in today’s friendly against Huddersfield Town and will join up for training tomorrow. He will then head out with his new teammates on the club’s North American pre-season tour.
