Forget calendars or temperatures or BST. It used to be that as a Liverpool fan you really knew it was summer when Arda Turan got linked with a move to Anfield. It was regular; like clockwork. Turan hasn’t been linked with a Liverpool move in a while now, but these days, there’s someone nearly as good for judging the changing seasons and opening transfer windows.
Cristian Tello, the sort-of still a Barcelona player who was supposed to spend the past two seasons on loan at Porto only he wasn’t playing much so that loan got terminated and he ended up at Fiorentina instead in January. It’s all a little convoluted, but now that he’s heading back at Barcelona there’s a need to find the now 24-year-old winger who made 15 Serie A appearances in his six months in Italy a permanent home.
In Spain, Marca claim Fiorentina are eager to retain him, but there have been few suggestions in Italy that they actually do. And Marca also claim Liverpool want in on the action. Which is something they’ve said going on five seasons now, as Tello has been linked to Liverpool since he was still a teenager. The only real difference this time around is Jürgen Klopp is said to be a big fan of the winger.
Chances are he isn’t and that Liverpool are precisely as interested in Tello this time out as last time and the time before that and the time before that and the time before that. Which is to say not at all. Still, at least it’s good to have it confirmed that it really is summer now, and for that we probably all should really say thanks to Marca for re-floating the annual tall Tello tale. Wouldn’t be the off-season without it.
