Once a rumoured Liverpool transfer target, always a rumoured Liverpool transfer target. And on that note, we’d like to welcome Javier Hernandez back to the land of rumoured mongers, as having been linked last January, the Mexican striker is this week again being talked up as a potential winter signing.
The 28-year-old striker moved to Bayer Leverkusen last season and was in fine form in Germany, scoring 26 goals in 40 total appearances. It was a return that was more than good enough to see him linked with an Anfield move last winter when Liverpool were in need of attacking reinforcements.
Heading into another January transfer window, Liverpool once again find themselves in need of some attacking reinforcements—Jürgen Klopp has even admitted as much—and so Hernandez, better known as Chicharito, is once again being tabled as a potential signing by the rumour mongers.
The Mirror, The Star, The Express. All have waved their hands around and come up with Chicharito, whose form has somewhat returned to earth this season. They have also managed to link Tottenham to the striker, because no Liverpool transfer rumour would be complete without competition from Spurs.
As for the player in question, seven goals and two assists in 21 total appearances is still a solid showing, but it’s hardly the stellar return that set him up to be the rumour du jour last winter. He’s also down to a year and a half left on his contract, which would in theory make him more affordable.
Of course, there’s very little here to suggest this is a rumour that makes it past the theory stage and into practice, and the most serious Liverpool transfer rumours heading into January have involved wide players and versatile attackers capable of playing multiple positions.
