This morning, it was Moussa Dembélé. Last week, it was Julian Brandt. The week before that, it was Quincy Promes. And kicking off Liverpool’s rumoured interest in a string of young, versatile attackers way back in the summer was Christian Pulisic.
Now, according to a smattering of English tabloids lead by the Daily Mail, Pulisic is back near the top of the list as Liverpool target an early January acquisition to cover for the injured Philippe Coutinho and soon to depart for the AFCON Sadio Mané.
The revitalized rumour has Pulisic likely to cost around £25M, a steep price for an 18-year-old but one that given his already prominent role for Borussia Dortmund would likely be a fair one. Of course, fair might not be enough to convince Dortmund to sell.
Regardless, it seems clear Liverpool have a certain type of target for January. And it’s clear they want a deal done quickly. If Dortmund are willing and see a £25M return for Pulisic as making his sale worthwhile, it’s easy to see him being brought in.
If that happens, it’s likely any deal would be done in time for the opening of the transfer window. And if it’s not clear that Pulisic is set to arrive in the days leading up to January 1st, it will almost certainly mean there’s another attacker set to arrive.
It could be Pulisic. It could also be Dembélé or Brandt or somebody whose name hasn’t been linked publicly as yet. It seems clear, though, that it will be someone. And that it will happen quickly.
