Rumour Mongering: Southampton Eye Sturridge Loan

The Daniel Sturridge exit rumours persist, this time with Southampton joining the fray.

Another day, another Daniel Sturridge transfer rumor away from Liverpool. This time Southampton join the likes of West Ham, Stoke, and AC Milan (one of these things is not like the other) in the chase—if there is a chase—to land Liverpool’s striker.

Whether the striker is pushing for a move is an open question, although Jürgen Klopp appears to not be too concerned. The tabloids, on the other hand, are having a field day. Oh, the possibilities!

The latest rumor comes courtesy of another source of questionable repute, The Express. According to the report, Southampton are hoping to sign Sturridge to a loan deal for the second half of the season, with an option to buy in the summer. While Southampton might want to reverse track on the St. Mary’s to Anfield train route, this move seems highly unlikely.

Now, this might be a move that both the player and Southampton want, but Klopp & Co. have very little reason to sell, particularly before the end of the season. Sturridge might not be the first choice to start these days, but he is usually the first option off the bench. Divock Origi does not yet appear ready to fill that role, and an injury to Roberto Firmino would leave the Reds perilously thin up top.

Regardless of whether this particular link has any merit, the “Daniel Sturridge wants to leave” rumor appears to not be going away any time soon.
