An Italian outlet has linked Liverpool with out-of-favor Inter Milan midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia. The claim is that Klopp hopes to snatch up the Frenchman in January on a loan to shore up Reds’ midfield for a league challenge.
Kongodbia has fallen down the pecking order at Inter Milan this season, having featured in only four games so far. He moved to the Italian giants from Monaco in 2015 and has failed to live up to his steep £25million price tag.
As the season wears on and injuries begin to take a toll on Liverpool’s robust midfield options, Klopp may need some reinforcements to make it through. One thing Liverpool fans aren’t looking forward to is the African Cup of Nations when new signing Sadio Mané will miss a month of matches to play for his country, leaving the Reds to fill his spot in the starting XI.
That said, Kondogbia is primarily a defensive midfielder, a position that Klopp has shown limited interest in over the past year. Furthermore, with the current strength of the manager’s options on the bench and up-and-coming in the academy, it seems unlikely that Klopp is desperate to nab a half-season loan deal for a midfielder that is third or fourth on the depth chart at Inter Milan.
Cross fingers, tap wood, but that’s not a situation the team is in at the moment, even with Mané’s planned AFCoN departure in the winter. Could be wrong, but this looks like smoke and mirrors from the Italian press, trying to create a story where none exists.
