Though it didn't get much play in England at the time, Bild claim that Liverpool targeted Schalke's rising star 19-year-old winger Leroy Sane and saw an initial bid rejected over the summer. They are now, at least if the German tabloid is to be believed, preparing to go after the youngster again in January.
Schalke, though, are expected to put up a fight. With Sane having recently extended his contract through 2019 and Schalke looking to build for long-term success around a side filled with young talent, Bild believe the club are not interested in selling off any more players after having to let Julian Draxler go for £25M in August.
That sale, while lamented by the club's fans, has put Schalke in a more solid financial position, one from which they believe they can fend off interest in the likes of Sane, Max Meyer, and Leon Goretzka. All of which adds up to a belief that Liverpool would have to raise their bid significantly to have any chance at Sane.
The rumoured new bid being bandied about is around £11M, though that isn't believed to be enough to land the young winger. Tottenham are also reportedly interested in a January move after having a reported £8.5M bid for Sane rejected over the summer. So far this season, Sane has three goals and an assist in nine appearances.
