Increasingly, deadline day seems set to amount to a whole lot of nothing for Liverpool and the club’s fans. Outside of a series of frankly unlikely and a touch ridiculous reports of interest in Andriy Yrmolenko coming out of Italy, for the most part it’s been about waiting to see if the club can manage to ship out Jose Enrique and find a home on loan for Tiago Ilori.
Enrique now looks likely to be stuck at Liverpool following reports that Sunderland had distanced themselves from a rumoured deal. Ilori, meanwhile, remains up in the air, though with less than an hour to go in the window there remain reports that Aston Villa is working to secure the 22-year-old defender on loan for the coming season, even if they don’t appear need any more defensive depth.
Villa have brought in Joleon Lescott and Micah Richards this already, and the expectation is the two will be Tim Sherwood’s preferred defensive duo. Add in Jores Okore, Ciaran Clark, and Philipe Senderos and the Villains appear to already have five players for two positions. Even if Richards is moved to fullback, it’s still a very crowded depth chart Ilori would be joining.
Still, The Times’ Duncan Castles, who has ties to the Birmingham club, believes a deal remains possible and that Villa are working to get it done.

Whatever happens, at least Liverpool and Aston Villa fans should find out soon enough. If one were a betting man, though, the smart money would likely be on Liverpool ending the day having done nothing at all, which perhaps shouldn’t be surprising given how averse they have been to doing deadline day deals under Fenway Sports Group.
