Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers, off a seventh-place season in last year’s Championship and looking to push on to promotion this time around, are targeting young Liverpool attacker Sheyi Ojo and hope to bring him to the club on loan within the week.
Following widespread reports of interest, Wolves manager Kenny Jackett confirmed their interest in the player today while speaking to the press. While the deal isn’t quite done yet, Wolves are confident one can be done, and for their part it appears Liverpool would be happy to send Ojo to the West Midlands side.
The 18-year-old Ojo scored the winner yesterday in Liverpool’s final pre-season match against Swindon Town and has looked promising with the reserve team since arriving from MK Dons for £2M as a highly rated 14-year-old, but he is not considered in contention for the first team this season.
Primarily deployed as a winger throughout his youth career, Ojo has also shown signs he could develop into a striker. He spent the second half of last season onloan with Wigan Athletic, where he made 11 appearances to generally positive reviews for the now relegated Championship side.
Wolves are currently putting the finishing touches on a loan move for Cardiff striker Adam Le Fondre, and if they can follow that up with Ojo, it would likely settle their first choice attack for the coming season.
