Early in the summer, rumours in France linked Liverpool with a move for PSG’s 22-year-old left back Lucas Digne, who seemed on the verge of stardom until he got bought up by the Parisian big spenders and ended up buried down the depth chart.
Then, nothing much happened. The rumours faded into the background. This week, though, they have taken off again following revelations from PSG’s Laurent Blanc the player has asked to leave the club, though if he does the manager insists it will have to be on the club’s terms.
"It is he who very clearly asked to leave," Blanc told L’Equipe earlier this week. "For now he is with us, he is very professional. He trains well and has prepared excellently. This is firstly a very good thing for him and, possibly, for us should he stay with the club this season."
Blanc was seeking to clear up reports that the club saw the highly regarded French youngster as surplus to requirement and were actively shopping him around. Still, whether PSG are actively looking to sell or not, it’s a sign the player may well be available.
Taking the rumour from one where Digne might move this summer to one where Digne could move to Anfield this summer is Sky Italy’s Guglielmo Cannavale, who today claimed Digne’s agent has told him Liverpool and Roma have both shown interest in his client this summer.
There’s a lot of space between Liverpool interest and a player actively looking to move on one hand and a deal getting done on the other. Plus there’s the fact that with Joe Gomez having impressed in pre-season, Liverpool may no longer consider left back a priority.
Still, there’s enough there to give the rumour some grounding, and with Jose Enrique reportedly told he can leave if he finds a club to pay his wages, left back may still be seen as a position that needs strengthening heading into the new season.
