Liverpool FC Transfer Rumours: Liverpool Return with Improved Bid for Spanish Midfielder

New, comments

After an earlier bid was rejected, Liverpool have reportedly returned to Real Madrid with a bid that they hope will secure the services of outcast midfielder Asier Illarramendi.

News of a deal to move Carlos Bacca to AC Milan took the wind out of the sails for some Liverpool supporters, mostly because it appeared to indicate that the club were content to wait for the right time to bid for Christian Benteke. It's not a huge setback in the scheme of things, but rather a moment for pause in the midst of what has become a mostly promising summer for Liverpool to this point.

It could quickly get better if reports of a £15m bid for Real Madrid midfielder Asier Illarramendi prove true. The out-of-favor 25-year-old looked certain to leave if Carlo Ancelotti remained in charge at the Bernabeu, and while he might find a second chance under new boss Rafa Benitez, the rumored bid from Liverpool could be enough to move the former Real Sociedad man to Merseyside.

As is so often the case when his name comes up, the main concerns about Illarramendi are focused on his two troubled seasons since moving to Madrid, which have seen him regress significantly as the pressure increased and the opportunities decreased. The abilities that impressed so much in San Sebastian haven't disappeared, but his ability to execute when given the chances are nowhere to be seen, and that's a worrying reality for many.

There's also the reality of his career prior to moving to the capital, which could very well be worth £15m. At worst he ends up another depth option in a midfield that's got enough quality to get by, but at best he becomes Liverpool's holding midfielder for years to come. It seems a gamble worth taking, and one that would once again underline the club's intentions to improve the squad and rebound from last season's disappointing finish.
