Liverpool Target Charlton Athletic Teenager Joe Gomez

New, comments

The Liverpool Echo reports that Liverpool are keen on Charlton's England Under-19 star.

He's the one in the left. Just kidding, he's the one on the right. Seriously.

Liverpool are still on the search for young talent at home and abroad, and Brendan Rodgers has been excellent at promoting young talent in his three seasons at the club to date. Even some of Liverpool's more notable signings last summer were young players with room to develop and grow; this strategy seems to be one that the club will continue to pursue at some level to find more value in the market. All the big clubs do it, seeking to add players to the academy and reserves who can blossom into stars of the future. Raheem Sterling may not be too popular with Liverpool fans at the moment, but the fleet-footed young star is a perfect example of such a way of working.

There have been a number of young centre backs signed by the club over the past ten years who haven't found the opportunities to play or make an impression for the senior team. Jack Hobbs, Gabriel PalettaSebastián Coates, and Tiago Ilori have all come to the club without breaking through. Hobbs and Paletta arrived within a year of each other but both found first-team football elsewhere. Coates is on his way out, and Ilori's future is uncertain. The Liverpool Echo think another name could be added to the list of precocious centre backs, and hopefully he will be the one to break the pattern.

Charlton Athletic's Joe Gomez is 18-years-old and has been followed closely by Anfield scouts over the past year. Arsenal and Manchester City have been linked with the London native, and any club interested in securing the services of the teenager will have to put together a package of £3.5 million with add-ons topping up the fee. Beyond that, the Liverpool Echo report doesn't provide much else. An inquiry has been made, and Liverpool are keen to tie this deal up.

This is a new name to add to the list of players linked to the club, but Joe Gomez could be a Liverpool player this summer. Andre Wisdom signed a new contract, Lloyd Jones is regarded highly, and Tiago Ilori exists (we think) too. Should Liverpool hold off pursuing young talent this summer or continue to pick up the most talented prospects around while strengthening the first-team squad?
