Swings and roundabouts in talk surrounding potential Liverpool targets as they look to add goals this summer, with a number of potential additions being linked on a near-daily basis. Two seem to be the subject of serious interest, while links to other targets--ones that would appear to be a better fit and arguably of better quality--are tenuous at best. As is so often the case early in the summer, it's hard to know what's what other than the fact that Liverpool are in need of something to improve an attacking setup that was in desperate need of help for most of the season.
One of the names that has come up from time to time is Luciano Vietto, the 21-year-old Argentine striker currently at Villareal. In his first season in La Liga he proved a resounding success, making a seamless transition from the Argentinean Primera Division and cementing his place among the more promising young forward talents in Europe. His fit at Liverpool, or at the least the system Brendan Rodgers purported to implement since arriving, would be perfect, and the cost wouldn't be too exorbitant. It would be the perfect type of transfer for the club to pursue, and one that would no doubt improve Liverpool's attack.
The main problem for Liverpool is that he's almost certainly headed elsewhere, all but confirming as much in an interview published by AS indicating that Atletico Madrid is the preferred destination:
"If a club like Atlético or similar come along and are prepared to pay this, then it's something I'll have to consider with my family and agent. Afterwards, I'll make a decision. If they were to pay the buy-out clause, then that could be the best thing for all. But at the moment there is nothing so we'll just have to wait. I'm with (Villareal) 100%, the future is something that I can't talk about, and we don't know what will happen."
That leaves a small sliver of hope for teams that might fall into the "similar" category Vietto mentions, a category that might exclude Liverpool given their middling season, but by all accounts a move to Atletico has been an open secret for weeks, and it now looks like the only outcome so long as they meet the player's buyout. As they've done since links have cooled, Liverpool must now move on to other targets in search of strengthening their attacking contingent this summer.
