If it’s Monday, it must be time to link Liverpool with yet another Barcelona player, and England’s tabloids have a new name to add to the pile this week in 20-year-old Sergi Samper. The Catalan youngster currently plies his trade for Barca B, where according to the Metro, Mirror, and others he is disappointed to have been left out of consideration for a first team promotion this season.
This has led to his agent pushing for a move, and with no plans to include him in the first team next year, either, Barcelona may be willing to deal despite the transfer ban that prevents them from signing any new players this summer. Arsenal are also rumoured to have been tracking the young defensive midfielder, but the suggestion is that Liverpool are frontrunners to land his services once the window opens.
Samper’s path to the Barcelona first team is currently blocked by Sergio Busquets, who at 26 years of age and as one of the best holding midfielders in the game is unlikely to be displaced any time soon. Samper has made 67 appearances for Barca B over the past two seasons, notching three assists along the way. He has also made four appearances for the senior side, all in cup play.
Quick and technically gifted if unlikely to add much threat in the final third, Samper has represented Spain at every youth level, and he is currently a mainstay on the U21 squad preparing for this summer’s U21s European Championships in the Czech Republic.
