Rumour Mongering: Liverpool Set to Beat Tottenham and Manchester United to Dutch Forward

Post-World Cup transfer rumors tend to careen back and forth until something sticks or flames out, and that was mostly the case with Dutch international Memphis Depay. The talented forward had a solid showing in Brazil and found himself connected to a number of clubs, including Spurs and Manchester United, before eventually remaining at PSV Eindhoven for his fourth season with the senior squad.

The winger has been with the perennial Eredivisie power since 2006, breaking through in the 2011 season and cementing his spot in a 2013-2014 campaign that saw him impress domestically and on the continent in the Europa League. He's continued his excellent form into this season, scoring 19 goals between league and Europa League competition and playing an important part in PSV's 11-point lead atop the Eredivisie.

Impressive stuff to be sure, even accounting for the poor standard of defending in the Dutch top flight, and a link to Liverpool--especially from the Mirror, who specialize in dartboard rumor projection--is not surprising. He will once again find himself targeted by myriad clubs as the summer window approaches, and with Liverpool an attractive destination for young talent in England and beyond, it's a logical link to make.

Everyone's favorite rumour mongerers one-up themselves here, however, by claiming that Liverpool have had monthly contact with the Dutch frontrunners and apparently enjoy a friendly relationship with the player's agent. Even further, they claim that Depay would prefer to join Rodgers' squad rather than Spurs or United, which is good for laughs whether or not you think this transfer is a thing that's occurring in reality.

It very well could be, of course, but there's plenty of time between now and the start of the summer window, and Liverpool's needs (and budget) will likely lead them elsewhere, whether or not they're friends with his agent.
