Following the match against Blackburn, Glen Johnson was asked about his future and told reporters that outside of the fact there hadn’t been any new talks with Liverpool about a new contract, it was completely up in the air. If today’s rumours are to be believed, it’s about to become far more certain, with reports in Italy suggesting he will sign a deal with Roma by Thursday.
SportItalia and TuttoMercatoWeb both believe a deal with The Wolves is imminent and that Johnson will sign a pre-contract later this week, confirming that the right back will be heading to Serie A this summer on a free transfer. It’s a move that’s been rumoured for the former England international since before last summer, when rumours suggested a cut-rate deal to send him to Roma straight away was possible.
In the end, that deal never materialised, but the Roma whispers never disappeared completely. If, this time around, the rumoured deal actually materialises, Johnson will be set to join Ashley Cole on the flanks in the Italian capital next season. Roma currently sit second in Serie A, though eleven points between them and league leaders Juventus means this year’s title is almost certainly out of reach.
