Defender's Bologna Loan Terminated, Move to Spain Confirmed

Liverpool's Rafa Paez had spent the first half of the season with Serie B side Bologna, but news over the past few days has confirmed that his time in Italy is over, with a temporary move to La Liga side SD Eibar now in the works.

Brendan Rodgers has consistently stated that he expects a quiet January, and other than the departure of Suso and recall of Jordon Ibe, it looks as though the manager's words will hold true. There might yet be a surprise or two tomorrow, but all signs point a deadline day without much action, which means this weekend's news regarding young central defender Rafa Paez might hold up as Liverpool's last bit of business  for the month.

He had been on loan at Serie B side Bologna since August, with the Italian side reportedly retaining an option to buy as part of the deal, but after making just eight appearances through the first half of the season the loan has been terminated. Bologna are currently eight points back of the top spot in Italy's second division on the strength of four straight wins, which is good enough for second place and automatic promotion.

Paez, who turns 21 years old this August, immediately secured another temporary move, this time to Basque side SD Eibar, who are eighth in their first-ever La Liga campaign. It's not exactly a return home for Paez, who hails from Orihuela in Alicante, but it's a chance to play in Spain's top flight, which would have surely been the goal for the former Hercules and Real Madrid youth player.

There's not yet any news about whether or not Eibar will retain a similar option to Bologna, but they were in need of bodies after the sale of Raúl Albentosa to Derby County, and hopefully this affords more opportunities for Paez.
