It’s a Boxing Day miracle, with Liverpool nabbing three points against Burnley to put them back on top of the Premier League table, at least temporarily. One goal scored in the beginning of the game, one scored at the end, and two ruled out in the middle for Liverpool marked another good win on the road.

After their draw against Arsenal, this victory was a palette cleanser to end 2023 and hopefully start off 2024 on the right note. Furthermore, Manchester United did their part by beating Aston Villa in the late game on Tuesday, putting the Reds in an even better position.

“Obviously [it’s] very important,” captain Virgil van Dijk said in an interview following the game. “It’s very important to get three points here. It’s been a very intense nine [or] 10 days, with four difficult games and different challenges. I think we did very well.”

The victory was even more important because of how many games the team has pushed through and performed well in to get there. The festive period is a make-or-break time for teams. The fixture congestion plus the cold weather leads to fatigue and injuries. Liverpool have plenty of their own injured players, but so far they’ve been able to push through.

“I don’t think it was a lot of luck, to be absolutely honest,” van Dijk admitted of Tuesday’s win. “It’s never easy, they play at home and they won their last game, so they have a bit of confidence as well and we have to be very good and ready to suffer. I think we were good with the changes we made.”

The back line of Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back, Joe Gomez at left-back, and Jarell Quansah partnering with van Dijk in the center came about because of injuries to Andy Robertson, Kostas Tsimikas, and Joël Matip. They managed to keep a clean sheet away from home, which will be a relief to Liverpool fans after they watched two left-backs go down in the past few weeks.

Liverpool will start 2024 on New Years Day by welcoming Newcastle United to Anfield.
