19-year old center-back Sepp van den Berg joined Liverpool from Dutch club PEC Zwolle in 2019 for a fee of £1.3 million. He made a few appearances in league cup games, but was then sent on loan to Championship side Preston North End in February 2021. Initially a 6-month loan deal, it was extended by 12 months in June 2021 owing to strong performances from the young defender.

Earlier this week he scored a goal as his side beat Morecambe in the EFL Cup. Last evening he scored again in Preston’s game against Swansea City, making it a brace in one week. The second goal was scored after van den Berg deftly brought down a long ball, and slotted it into the bottom corner of the net, drawing comparisons to Sadio Mane and Harry Kane from gleeful fans on Twitter.

Preston coach Frankie McAvoy said, speaking to iFollow PNE, “Anybody can see it’s our task to get the wing backs as high up the pitch as we can. These are two young boys as well, Josh Earl and Sepp van den Berg, who’s 19 years of age and scores again. It’s just fantastic; the amount of opportunities and times you can get them into the box is great. I just felt overall we played really well at times.”
