While there haven’t been many new signings to add to Liverpool’s roster in this summer transfer window, what we have gotten are plenty of established players signing new contract or extensions to keep them at the club for the foreseeable future. However, one name that is conspicuously absent from the list of secured Liverpool players is Jordan Henderson.
The Liverpool captain has spent the last decade of his career with the Reds, vociferously refusing moves away and impressively taking over the mantle of skipper once Steven Gerrard left for sunny LA. As captain, Hendo helped Liverpool make it to two European finals and bring home number six. Most impressively, Liverpool also broke their Premier League draught and Henderson lifted the trophy in 2020.
No one doubts the importance of Henderson to the team, especially not Jürgen Klopp. When asked about the situation and his thoughts on his captain’s future, Klopp played a bit of a word game, staying vaguely positive.
“Important, but it will happen. We will sort it, we will sort it – however it will be then. But we will sort it, no doubt about that. It will get sorted,” he promised.
“However it will be then” doesn’t have the most comforting ring to it and ultimately tells us absolutely nothing. So it seems that things are still very much up in the air on that front. Hopefully they will figure things out soon so that Henderson can focus all of his energy on leading the team into the new season.
