It’s not exactly gone to plan this season for Thiago Alcantara.
Billed as the extra zest that would give Liverpool a new dimension in midfield, he’s watched last season’s system crumble without adequate centre backs while he isn’t really an obvious answer to any of the side’s problems. No one can deny his obvious ability, but nor can they figure out how it’s supposed to fit into this team.
Yesterday was a typical occasion. Liverpool dominated for most of the match and had plenty of chances, but didn’t put them away and conceded late to drop points at home to Newcastle. It leaves the Reds in a precarious position to finish in the Premier League’s top four places and qualify for next season’s Champions League.
“We have no words to explain the disappointment we have,” Thiago told BT Sport, as reported by This Is Anfield.
“The will to win, the desire to win is a very big part of the competition. We had a lot of chances to win in the first half.
“We tried to play our game. That was the key today. It worked very good in the first half, we created many spaces and created a lot of chances.
“It doesn’t change that we want to win and want to be in the Champions League but for that we have to deserve to be there.”
Look, Liverpool were so careless against Newcastle. It was a punishment that had been coming. Thiago himself can’t be blameless, even if it’s not clear what he was signed to do in this system. Not much less than five wins in the last five games will do now.
