This has not been a great season for Liverpool. But you already know that.
Last week’s limp exit to Real Madrid in the Champions League confirmed the inevitable: there’s not going to be some fairy tale ending to this campaign. It’s been a hard and miserable slog, and such it will remain until the bitter end.
The only thing on the line is making sure the Reds finish in the top four to qualify for next season’s Champions League. And it’s clear that’s where Jürgen Klopp’s mind is at.
“We have kind of seven finals, we will see in the end how many points we will need to really make it happen”, This Is Anfield report Klopp as saying.
“But I said it before, we should not waste time or points, we really have to go for it. That’s the situation we are in.
“The good thing about it is there are some teams around these spots, they pretty much all have to defend [their position].
“I think maybe two or three weeks ago we had nine points less and it looked like Leicester, West Ham and Chelsea were all away and ahead of us.
“But with the three games we could put a little bit of pressure on them and now we have to carry on with that, and let’s see.”
Those seven finals are against Leeds, Newcastle, Man Utd, Southampton, West Brom, Burnley and Crystal Palace. Liverpool can do this. It’s a matter of being sharp enough, playing the way we know the side is capable of, and not letting those errors creep back into the games.
I’m betting on us to pull it off.
