Gini Wijnaldum’s Liverpool contract expires at the end of the season. He’s been free to sign a pre-contract agreement with a club outside the Premier League since January. If you’re a Liverpool fan, you’re probably well aware.
In fact, if you’re a Liverpool fan, you’re probably a little sick of hearing about it at this point and would rather like to know where he’s headed next and have it over. Wijnaldum, though, says that right now at least he wants to keep his focus on the present—and getting the Reds back on track.
“You want to hear what is going to happen,” Wijnaldum told beIN Sports. “But for me if there is nothing to say, no news, then I cannot say something so I hope [fans] will stay patient until there is news.
“I think the most important thing right now is that we fix things in the game as a team and get results rather than talking about an individual—in this case about me, about my contract situation. I think we can better focus on other things.”
That focus, at least for now, will be on a mid-week Champions League match against Leipzig and the chance for Liverpool to advance to the quarter finals. Then, a return to league play and an attempt to perhaps begin to salvage the season.
After that, and perhaps not until the season is actually over, we’ll find out where Wijnaldum is heading next. Hopefully, when we do, he and his current teammates will have succeeded in fixing things on the pitch and salvaging the season.
