Football never, ever stops. And in case you’d somehow forgotten that, the Premier League announced today that the dates have been set for the 2021-22 season: it will kick off on the weekend of Saturday, August 14, and conclude on Sunday, May 22 of 2022.
That’s just about five months from now, and after a compressed a hectic 2020-21 season due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, it seems awfully soon. However, it’s actually a date that has been pushed back from an initially proposed August 7th start.
It’s also a date that means barring unexpected complications there will be a full month off after the Euro 2021 final on July 11th, hopefully allowing even players who go deep in that tournament to get a few weeks off to sit on a beach or spend time with family.
The current season is set to conclude with a full slate of games on Sunday, May 23rd, with the FA Cup final oddly scheduled a week earlier on May 15th and the Champions League final to be played on May 29th. The Euros then kick off on June 11th.
