It’s not been a good few days for Liverpool or the club’s fans. Their first home loss to Everton in the league since the Paleozoic made sure of that.
Extend it back a few weeks and things aren’t all that much better. There’s a pair of rather lopsided in a bad way results against Leicester and Manchester City as the latter hit form and run away with the league .
Extend it back a few more weeks and things still aren’t all that much better. Loses to Burnley and to Southampton, turgid draws with West Brom and Newcastle.
So. Rather than wallow in it, have a palate cleanser. A brief reminder that Virgil van Dijk exists and is the world’s best centre half and that while he may not be fit and available to play for Jürgen Klopp’s currently struggling but recently Premier League title winning and 196 points over two seasons winning and sixth European Cup winning group that added Thiago Alcantara and Diogo Jota last summer side, he will return.

It’s a bad spell, if you’re a Liverpool fan. But it will get better. The injured players will slowly return, even if it’s not in time to make a difference for this season. The fans so many in this squad clearly feed off of will return. A few players who need it might even get a solid month off to sit on a beach at some point and recover from a physically and mentally draining year or 18 months or past two-and-a-half seasons.
So. Just a simple palate cleanser. A thrusting* reminder. Of the good times that came before and just might come again if we can resist the urge towards any reckless knee-jerk reactions and ride out this difficult stretch.
