We’ve finally had some good news from 2021 with Joël Matip set to return to training and games this week. Matip, who suffered an adductor injury last month and has been sidelined for the last three league games, will add a very necessary boost to Liverpool’s backline that have been run beyond ragged this season. When asked about his absence in today’s game against Manchester United, the boss made clear he was prioritising Matip’s complete recovery.
“Joël could only do part of the sessions since Friday. Now it’s Sunday so that’s not [long] enough,” Klopp said. “But from tomorrow he will train normally, hopefully everyone will be fine. That’s why Hendo plays [in that position] again.”
When asked about whether or not Matip would be back in time for the game against Burnley on Thursday, Klopp had this to say: “He will be in the [selection] mix, but I don’t know [if he’ll be able to play]. I’m pretty sure he trained today, another tough session, [that] means [he] will be from tomorrow on with us. Probably yes, but we don’t know.”
If he’s not back in time for the league match against Burnley on Thursday, he’ll definitely be back for the FA Cup tie against United at Old Trafford where Liverpool will hopefully have a much better attack and maybe score a goal or three.
