Liverpool will make the trip to face Chelsea in the new season’s first real big-ticket game between title contenders on Sunday. For observers, it’ll be a contrast in offseason approaches with Liverpool’s lone signing of Kostas Tsimikas, and Chelsea embarking on a shopping spree (including long-time Liverpool target Timo Werner) that would make any drunk in the wee hours of the morning Amazon impulse purchaser proud.
Two of their new additions, Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell were spotted in training with their new club on Wednesday. Silva presumably had been in quarantine, and Chilwell was dealing with a heel injury. They should both be in contention to play against Liverpool on Sunday.
Two players who are set to miss out are Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic. The former is nursing a knee issue, and the Great American Hope is still on the comeback trail from the hamstring injury he suffered at the 5-3 Anfield thriller played at the end of July. Chelsea still have a plethora of attacking options to choose from, including Werner and fellow new boy Kai Havertz, who made their debuts on Monday in a 1-3 win against Brighton at the AMEX Stadium.
