After they kick off their 2020-21 Premier League season against Marcelo Bielsa’s newly promoted Leeds United, Liverpool face top four hopefuls Chelsea and Arsenal back to back to round out September.

On paper at least it makes for a challenging first month to the season for the Reds as they look to defend their first league title in three decades, but this is a group that has never backed down from a challenge.

“Tough fixtures, but we just have to get good results,” was midfielder Gini Wijnaldum’s reaction after the fixture list was announced. “My first season when I came here it was also a tough start with three away games.

“This is quite similar. But in the Premier League all games are difficult, especially in the beginning because everyone is fresh. We just have to train good, play the games, and prepare ourselves for the season.”

If they can overcome that potentially challenging start, hopes will be high for another successful campaign for a group of players who won the league last season and Champions League the year before.

And if they can pass that first hurdle and end a compressed season with another major piece of silverware, there will be no doubts this group have fully earned their place in the pantheon of all-time great Liverpool sides.

“When you play game after game, then we’re going to see how tough it is,” Wijnaldum added. “But we dealt with that situation before in some periods. We know how to deal with it but it’s going to be difficult.

“Most periods of the season we’re going to play a lot of games. We just have to deal with the situation. I just hope we can deal with every situation we will get in and make it as good as last season.”
