Liverpool Remain “Far From the Finished Article” Says Joe Gomez

This group of players is determined not to let the current moment represent their pinnacle as a team.

Over the past two seasons, this group of Liverpool players has won the Champions League and the Premier League. They finished last season with a gargantuan 97 points and remain on pace to break the 100-point barrier this season.

The question now, for a side that has done so much, is what comes next? And how do the players stay motivated when they’ve been a dominant force for two years? As defender Joe Gomez sees it, though, this is a side with room to grow.

“Maybe five years ago, with some of the points tallies, if you knew they had been achieved, you would say there’s no chance,” said Gomez when asked if the Premier League champions-elect can improve heading into the 2020-21 season.

“I don’t know if it’s possible to carry on losing one or two games a season, but I think consistency is what we are striving for. I think continuing to keep that level of desire to win and finding a way to win is obviously what we can strive for now.

“We are far from the finished article and we’ve got a young, hungry squad that hopefully can keep on learning. It probably is something we will reflect on in years to come—to be thankful that we were part of this team. I know I feel that way.”

Another season where Liverpool only lose one or two games in the league might be hoping for a little too much, but given the focus and ability to grind out results this group has shown so far, you probably wouldn’t want to bet against them.
