In one of the many LFCTV videos, Mohamed Salah once told Andy Robertson that no one dreams of becoming a fullback. This might be true, despite the fact that fullbacks are becoming one of the most important positions, especially at Liverpool.
And while we’re on the subject of fullbacks and Liverpool, we can discuss how the Reds have had a nearly continuous string of world-class strikers, but have historically struggled to find a suitable fullback, especially on the left.
One leftback that could have been great for Liverpool is Fabio Aurelio, whose six-year career with the Reds was interrupted time and again because of injuries. Regardless, Aurelio is impressed with Liverpool’s current crop of fullbacks, and especially the man filling in at his former position: Andy Robertson.
“He’s kind of the complete player because physically he’s well capable of going forward and going back he defends very well,” Aurelio told LFCTV in an interview. “He’s quick, so his one-v-one is good and defensively that’s very important in the scheme Klopp plays. He goes forward very easily.
“One thing that calls my attention is that he’s always improving, he’s not comfortable in his situation being first choice. You will see that in every game he plays as his last one, so that’s courage.
“The two full-backs of Liverpool right now are unbelievable. We can contest in any kind of way.”
Now Robbo just needs to learn to score a free-kick at Old Trafford. If he can get the ball off of Trent Alexander-Arnold, that is.
