Virgil van Dijk Wants to Be Remembered “as a Liverpool Legend”

Having been at Anfield for two years now following a move from Southampton for a then-world record £75M transfer fee, Virgil van Dijk has inarguably established himself as the best centre half in the world.

Having added a Champions League title, runner-up finish in the Ballon d’Or, and soon a Champions League winner’s medal to his resume, there wouldn’t seem to be much left for Van Dijk to achieve on the pitch.

“As a Liverpool legend,” was his answer to Guillem Balague in Sport when the 28-year-old was asked what his next goal is and how he wants to be remembered as a player. “I want to achieve incredible things here.

“We have a fantastic team, we don’t lack anything, we have all the tools necessary to go on winning: a coach that we identify with, a versatile squad, a style of play that breeds victories, supporters that play their part.”

He’s certainly made a good start, and if Van Dijk were to spend another five or six years at Anfield leading the defence and winning a few more prizes, it’s difficult to imagine him being remembered any other way.

“I would like to be one of those players that return to Anfield after retiring,” he added. “I see club legends at games and I feel part of a really big family.”
